Jasper

With a name derived from Old French meaning “spotted or speckled stone,” jasper casts a fairly wide umbrella for many varieties such as red, ocean, kaleidoscope, and dalmatian. It is an opaque gem that takes form in a wide variety of hues, but is most commonly red, yellow, brown, or green with patterns that form during the consolidation process. The classification and naming of jasper is generally based on where it is found or what it displays. For example, picture jaspers feature combinations of patterns that result in images or scenes that are best viewed on a cut section or slice. Not only is it a beautiful gem that tells a story, but it has also been used for thousands of years for tools and even to produce seals. Jasper is sometimes referred to as the “supreme nurturer” in that it is thought to absorb negative energy and bring serenity and wholeness to the wearer.
