Iolite

Named after the Greek word “ios,” for violet, Iolite is a variety of the mineral cordierite. According to legend, Viking navigators used slices of iolite as filters when checking the sun’s position and locating the sun on cloudy days. Iolite can be strongly pleochroic, displaying different hues when viewed from different angles. Sometimes referred to as the “water sapphire”, it generally showcases a stunning blue violet hue similar to that of tanzanite but can then display a pale yellow to colorless hue, and sometimes both! Iolite is sometimes recommended for those suffering from disorientation or a lack of motivation. It is thought to unlock creativity in an artist and opens intuition allowing for clear communication and the freedom to express your true self. Iolite is also the gemstone for the twenty-first wedding anniversary!
